A silent debate

Last week we begun our new Unit on Sharing the Plant.

Grade 3 and 4 will be exploring the Central Idea that Humanity's future is dependent on resources.

Our first line of inquiry is into challenges due to limited resources.


Learners have been introduced to UNICEF's Global Goals and this week we have focussed on Goal 2: Zero Hunger.



Learners used a thinking routine called Claim, Support, Challenge, Question to engage in a silent debate.


Reading the Claim: Sheets were laid around the class with pictures or statements relating to hunger.



Supporting or Challenging the claim: Learners were asked to either Support or Challenge these ideas. This was done by writing their own opinions. Opinions should be informed by facts, reasons, examples or details.




Questions: Learners were encouraged to also note questions they had relating to either the original claim or another learner's opinion.

We learned and shared a lot on this interesting and complex topic.



Our guiding question throughout this first Line of Inquiry is "What's the problem?".
Visit our padlet on hunger and talk with your child about the causes of hunger and food insecurity and why it is a real issue for humanity.

Dear Parents, For our new unit on ENERGY, Grade 3 are going to be Scientists. In order to develop our scientific thinking, we are going to be conducting some basic experiments.[ This article on the value of scientific thinking may interest you ] In order to prepare for this, we are asking that all learner have access to the resources on this Unit Supplies List . Some of these supplies you may already have at home, most of them are easily available from Daiso or Lawson. Please try to make certain you have all of these supplies over the next two weeks. *Me and Ms. J have a stock of LED lights at school - if you do not have one at home and aren't able to purchase a single unit please let us know and you can come and collect one from school or we will send you one in the post. Rokko Island Festival

The Grade 3 & 4 classes have been invited to attend the Rokko Island Festival at Rokko Island Elementary School  on Friday, February 8th.  The event will take place during the first two blocks of the day when our learners will walk over to the school .   Learners will experience going to the different booths as "customers" as well as helping out as "shopkeepers". This event is a wonderful opportunity for us to connect with the local community as well as show our support. There are also connections to our previous Unit on Organisations as well as our current drama-based Unit (there will be dramatic productions put on by the students at Rokko Island Elementary).
