Affordable and Clean Energy

Since returning from Spring break we have continued our Unit on Sharing the Plant.

Grade 3 and 4 are exploring the Central Idea that Humanity's future is dependent on resources.

Our first line of inquiry is into challenges due to limited resources.

Our new UNICEF Global Goals focus for this week is Goal 7: Affordable & Clean Energy.

To start our exploration, learners used a thinking routine called 3 - 2 Bridge.
The above prompt (Affordable and Clean Energy) was put up and learners were asked to think of how these ideas connected. They were tasked with posting 3 thoughts/ideas and 2 questions.

Our unit then moved forward as learners had a number of opportunities to grow their understanding of affordable and clean energy:

We curated a list of energy sources - individually at first. Then we asked classmates, other learners and teachers so our lists were as comprehensive as possible. After we watched a video and discussed the concept of sustainability, learners sorted their lists into two categories - sustainable energy / un-sustainable energy.

Learners then used a Padlet on energy to further develop their understanding of sustainable and clean and affordable energy.

Groups of learners then had the opportunity to use an Eco Footprint Calculator and a story pack to glimpse how people around the world use energy. We heard about James (USA), Lorena (Brazil), Adrienne (Italy) & Surya (India).

After all these opportunities for learners to develop their thinking and understanding of Affordable and Clean Energy - we revisited the concept.

The prompt was put up a second time and learners were asked to post 3 new thoughts/ideas and 2 new questions.

The Bridge is a reflection in their Unit journals as learners reflect on how their understanding has developed through thinking and learning about energy.
